Sewing with Linda

Linda - our New England immigrant - is our resident Ms Fix-It.

Her column is updated every weekday or thereabouts, so check back often for new secrets and tips.

Reduce The Hem Allowance

Sometimes you just don't have enough material to lay your whole pattern out.

Consider the hem area as on place to reduce yardage use.

  • Decide where you want the hem to be and end the pattern at that mark plus ", leaving no hem allowance.

  • Use a coordinating piece of fabric to make a 2-" bias band.

  • Sew it on to the hem with a " seam.

  • Turn up and hem as usual.

  • Do you have Sewing ideas or secrets to share or have a question?

    You can Write to Linda!.

Include your first initial and last name.

I'll try to use your contribution in a future column.

(Please note that these columns are written several weeks in advance so publishing it will be delayed accordingly.)

    Linda, Red and Pup

I love to sew and create useful and fanciful things. I hope this helps you in your creative projects.
